Pelvic Health Physiotherapy

The pelvic floor is an important group of muscles and soft tissue structures that support the organs in the pelvis, including the bladder, urethra, and rectum, as well as the vagina and uterus in women in the prostate in men. The pelvic floor muscles are closely associated with the sphincter (valve) muscles that control urination and bowel movements. Many bladder and bowel symptoms that lead people to seek medical help are due to dysfunction of the pelvic floor muscles and not to the organs themselves. Furthermore most cases of pelvic pain are related to the muscles in the pelvic floor and not the bladder or bowels. In many cases, physical therapy using a variety of techniques to rehabilitate these pelvic floor muscles can lead to significant and lasting relief of symptoms.

Vesia is pleased to offer the services of a dedicated Pelvic Health Physiotherapist on-site. Such therapists have taken further studies and practice in the area of the pelvic floor and the conditions that may arise from the lumbopelvic area. These physiotherapists are qualified to do internal examinations on women and men in addition to other physiotherapy techniques.

Some conditions that can be treated with pelvic physiotherapy include:

  • urinary incontinence
  • frequency and urgency
  • bowel dysfunction
  • pelvic pain
  • sexual dysfunction
  • pre- and post-natal care
  • pelvic organ prolapse
  • post-radical prostatectomy incontinence and erectile dysfunction
  • various other symptoms related to the above list

Pelvic floor physiotherapy is an important part of the treatment and assessment strategy for many patients referred to vesia.

What to expect at your first visit:

A detailed consultation discussing your condition and symptoms will allow for appropriate assessment to follow. The assessment will involve an internal examination to provide information relating to the pelvic floor muscles, nerves, and other structures in the area. From this an individualized plan will be developed. This will include treatment options and a personalized home program.
